About Us
Barb City Manor opened its doors as a unique retirement home in Feburary 1979. Located in
the historic former Joseph F. Glidden and Jacob F. Haish DeKalb Public Hospial Buildings,
Barb City Manor is an affordable retirement home for more than 60 residents. The building
is owned by the City of DeKalb, which contracts with our volunteer board of directors.
Barb City Manor, Inc., to manage and govern the not-for-profit retirement home. Barb City
Manor is totally self-sufficient and has paid all maintenance, utilites, upkeep and
renovation costs to the building since 1982. We invite examination of our legal tax
structure, charter, by-laws and buget.
Barb City Manor represents a special concept in affordable retirement living with
security, dignity, and independence. It is not a nursing home or an assisted living facility.
Rather it is a senior residence designed to accommodate singles or couples, sixty-two years
of age or older, who are ambulatory, and who desire to lead an active life without the
responsibilities associated with home ownership. Senior citizens are able to enjoy life at
Barb City Manor in dignity and independence at a reasonable cost.
Barb City Manor is a not-for-profit retirement home, receiving generous community support
from groups, organizations and individuals. FRIENDS of Barb City Manor is the auxiliary,
which provides a variety of programs and services for residents, as well as funding assistance.
